Snail seller. A ladle in one hand, in the other she carries an earthenware pot containing snails. These are small gray snails picked from fennel tufts and cooked in salted water, flavored with orange peel and fennel following the “aïgo sau” recipe. To call her customers, the merchant sings a friendly refrain in Provençal “A l'aïgo sau lei limaçoun, n'i a de gros et de pichoun”. She is dressed in a light dress, a black apron and a large red kerchief with flowers crossed over her chest.
