(bugadière) Woman washing her laundry by the river. On her knees, she is installed in a three-sided wooden “caiso” (box), lined with straw. A basket full of laundry is placed next to her. To clean her laundry, she uses a wooden beater and Marseille soap. To better protect themselves from the sun, washerwomen often wear a dark-colored canvas hood covering their headdress and hanging down over their neck.
